Voice over IP (VoIP) is gaining traction in the business world. In fact, it’s projected that more than 79 percent of U.S. businesses will have a VoIP communications solution by 2013.

Merging voice and data into a single network improves productivity, which impacts the bottom line. But how much?

On average, companies are saving $105 per employee move/change—and that’s just one example according to TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS).

“That cost shrinks to almost zero with a VoIP product like TDS managedIP Hosted,” said Joe Kramschuster, director of commercial product management at TDS. “For a company with 10 employee moves or changes in a year, it adds up to about $1,000 in productivity savings.”

Totaling up the productivity savings puts the return on investment (ROI) of a VoIP system into sound, quantifiable numbers. Along with the productivity savings, there’s no significant upfront capital investment, maintenance, or upgrade fees. These are all critical factors for businesses trying to determine if VoIP is right for their business.

These is a lower, more simplified up-front cost structure of a hosted VoIP solution, when compared to a traditional IP-based PBX. Hardware costs, phone costs, long distance costs, maintenance costs, Internet service – all of these items are folded into a single price with a hosted VoIP solution. Total costs are lower than an IP-based PBX, and there are fewer surprises along the way, further boosting ROI.

But these specific hard costs are just the beginning.

When calculating the ROI for unified communications, VoIP and similar technologies, there are many metrics businesses can consider. TDS recommends businesses look at five key metrics when measuring the productivity gains of hosted VoIP:

There are no charges for employee office moves and changes. This staves off the current average cost of $105 per move or change, since these costs are virtually zero with VoIP.

Employees can seamlessly route their calls using a telephony toolbar. Juggling phones becomes a thing of the past, and calls go to the right place – every time.

The IT department no longer must manage multiple cabling infrastructures since phone and Internet are converged into a single network.

Team members can use the “find me/follow me” feature, which results in fewer missed calls, as well as more sales and business opportunities from current and potential customers.

A single inbox for voicemail and email allows for faster response time and improved customer satisfaction and retention.

Has your company tried to manage the ROI of moving to VoIP? Tell us about it in the comments.

What if mobile devices could connect to the corporate network – securely and easily?

Juniper Networks has launched new mobile connectivity solutions in hopes of accomplishing these goals, with the recent addition of new products to its Simply Connected portfolio.

“IT managers are trying to cope with the influx of mobile devices into the workplace. Juniper’s holistic approach advances security, simplifies the user experience and expands device support,” said- Alex Gray, senior vice president and general manager, Juniper Networks . “With these enhancements to our Simply Connected portfolio, Juniper sets a new standard for comprehensive policy enforcement delivering an end-to-end solution that integrates switching, routing and wireless to provide secure access for the entire enterprise.”

With new unified policy enforcement that is simplified and automated, IT managers can now set and automatically enforce consistent security and access policies across every wired, wireless and mobile connection from company-issued, personal and guest devices. This new approach ultimately reduces the burden on IT managers who struggle with bring-your-own-device (BYOD) administration and security enforcement access policies.

As the influx of personal devices accessing corporate networks, clouds and applications continues to disrupt enterprise environments, IT managers are faced with new security challenges that bring emerging, complex threats from mobile devices and new end-user applications.

“As businesses seek to secure data from a mobile and distributed workforce, unified policy enforcement and granular control over user access to their networks will be key to protecting data,” said Christine Liebert, senior analyst in security services for IDC.

Unlike solutions built for traditional networks with static policies and inconsistent enforcement, Juniper’s unified policy enforcement provides IT managers with granular control over user access to enterprise networks based on who they are, where they are, what applications they are using, and from what device.

New products and features in the Simply Connected Portfolio provide a holistic approach to security, unified policy and mobile access and include:

Juniper Networks SRX550 Services Gateway combines security, routing and switching in a single, consolidated and high-performance form for medium to large branch deployments.

SRX110 Services Gateway offers a consolidated, cost-effective networking and security platform for enterprise and commercial small branch environments.

WLA322 and WLA321 Series Wireless LAN Access Points are two new full-featured enterprise class access points at entry-level price points for low-to-medium density environments.

Junos Pulse Access Control Service/UAC and Junos Pulse Secure Access Service/SSL VPN deliver enhanced endpoint device integrity checks, assessment and security provisioning for Mac OS, iOS and Android devices. The Junos Pulse solution coordinates policy enforcement throughout the network, enabling IT to identify, on-board, secure and manage all personal, corporate-issued and guest devices and meet organization security and access policy requirements.

Updates to AppSecure in the latest Junos software release across the entire SRX Series product family now enable enforcement of application security and control based on the user versus device, allowing for consistent enforcement regardless of location or device not possible with other IP-based enforcement solutions.

Should a board of directors meet in person, every time? Not if a company can avoid major travel expenses by putting them on a high-quality video conference.

That’s the message LifeSize is sending with LifeSize Bridge, which provides a high level of quality at a reasonable cost for large, multiparty video calling.

Especially designed for high-profile meetings where quality is paramount, LifeSize Bridge offers a low-risk, cost-effective platform to modularly extend HD video conferencing to more people. Interoperable and standards-based, the easy-to-set-up and easy-to-use LifeSize Bridge can be deployed where you need it most.

With this strategy, high-stakes video conferences with corporate executives, business partners, branch office leadership teams, important clients and international stakeholders can have the same high impact as face-to-face meetings that require difficult and expensive travel.

LifeSize Bridge offers 16 flat-capacity ports at any bandwidth, frame rate or resolution, up to 1080p, without loss of capacity or capability. This ensures a consistent, immersive HD quality experience for every user. For large group collaboration, a single LifeSize Bridge call can be expanded to include up to 48 participants, or hundreds of participants when cascading multiple bridges.

Organizations can deploy LifeSize Bridge using scheduled calls, on-demand calls or a hybrid of both, thereby providing maximum flexibility for system administrators. With logical call layouts, data sharing and continuous presence coupled with voice-activated switching, LifeSize Bridge creates a true-to-life conference environment.

To ensure high HD video quality, LifeSize Bridge features:

Symmetric video up to 1080p30 and 720p60

Sustained frame rates

Encoder per participant

Up to 4 Mbps throughput per port

One potential problem for companies that wish to deploy video conferencing involving a large number of parties is the limitation of infrastructure. That’s why LifeSize Bridge was built with flexibility in mind:

Any codec, any speed, any resolution, any layout and any port without loss of capacity or capability

Scheduled and/or on-demand video calls, direct conference dialing and outbound dialing

Virtual operator

ISDN connectivity

Flexible layout options, including locking layouts

Easy administrative controls with drag-and-drop layout options and lecture mode

16 ports of flat capacity

Up to 48 participants with Expanded Conference License

Hundreds of participants when cascading multiple bridges

LifeSize also offers its Bridge product at a price that makes it affordable for even small businesses. The company contends that its price per port is the lowest in the industry. LifeSize Bridge is one-third the price of any competitor at Full HD 1080p30/720p60, and one eighth the price of any competitor at Full HD with a 48-way call.

When it comes to bring your own device (BYOD) strategies at the workplace, there is still a great divide between employees and businesses. This is according to a recent survey of 500 IT professionals and administrators by Mimecast.

While 47 percent of respondents find consumerization of IT important or highly important to the enterprise, when asked about the risk BYOD is perceived to bring to the enterprise, 21 percent said BYOD has been a risk to the business. A separate 26 percent admitted their business does not allow employees to use their own device for corporate tasks.

These results shows a significant disconnect. While employees value consumerization of IT, businesses are hesitant due to perceived risks. Half (50.7 percent) of the same set of IT professionals surveyed called out that employee access to personal devices was a productivity necessity, while only 7.9 percent said personal devices were detrimental to productivity. Meanwhile, 74 percent of the respondents emphasized that the enterprise’s biggest mobile challenge was managing information security.

“Employee support for consumerization of IT is in full swing, whether business leaders are ready to admit it or not,” said Orlando Scott-Cowley, senior product marketing manager of Mimecast. “These results show a massive divide between employee sentiment and what the enterprise is actually willing to support when it comes to personal devices. It’s time enterprises fully enable their employees’ productivity by not only supporting the range of mobile and tablet devices, but also providing the solutions that ensures corporate data remains secure.”

The IT professionals that participated in this survey also named the specific personal devices they currently own, with Apple and Android devices leading the pack. Although over half (56.3 percent) of the respondents indicated they were working on a Windows PC, 87.3 percent own a device running off the Apple operating system, with 44.5 percent owning an iPhone and 42.8 percent owning an iPad. Android mobile and tablet ownership followed, with 51.3 percent ownership, and Windows and Blackberry devices were next, with 26 percent and 19.2 percent ownership, respectively.

It’s clear that organizations that choose to support their employees’ personal devices within a secure environment will measurably increase their business productivity, as well as extend their employees’ flexibility. Additionally, the results underline a need for businesses to develop a platform agnostic device strategy that ensures corporate data remains secure.

Based on the survey results, Mimecast offered the following recommendations:

Provide comprehensive support – Employees will work around corporate IT infrastructure in order to be productive and find ways to leverage their personal devices, regardless of if they’re supported by the business or not. Supporting as many computing platforms as possible will ensure employees are accessing and sharing business data within a secure environment approved by the organization.

Focus on data – Seventy-one percent of those surveyed identified their role as a data custodian or someone responsible for locating content and establishing context that is aligned with associated business rules. An organization’s mobile strategy therefore needs to not only enable IT professionals to effectively manage the volume of data, but also provide the solutions that allow employees to securely access and leverage data as a business asset.

Enable productivity – Identify the business applications employees rely on – such as the organization’s email or social collaboration tools – and provide mobile and tablet support for these applications to ensure employees can remain productive.

Small, entrepreneurial players in the unified communications (UC) space continue to contrast their offerings with major competitors by offering flexible, multi-vendor and best-of-breed solutions, rather than all-in-one purchases like those from Cisco and Microsoft.

Point in case this week is ShoreTel, which has teamed up with HP and Polycom to provide bundled UC offerings that include voice, video, messaging and mobility applications.

“We are seeing significant customer demand for a best-of-breed built solution with a low total cost of ownership,” said Peter Blackmore, ShoreTel CEO. “Through our distributed architecture and joint promotion, we are able to further lower the cost of entry while maintaining ShoreTel’s commitment to a brilliantly simple solution.”

The offering includes on-premise, cloud and mobility solutions from ShoreTel, HP Networking solutions, and Polycom RealPresence video and voice solutions. The combined offerings are delivered via ShoreTel resellers that can design, implement and support all three products, providing customers with a single point of contact. The combination of ShoreTel, Polycom and HP allows organizations to:

Simplify design and management by enabling a flexible approach that adapts to future changes while driving down the complexity of management.

Deliver a consistent user experience (including video, voice, IM and presence) across a variety of platforms and device types, through the right infrastructure.

Increase reliability and resiliency with uninterrupted availability through a flexible network and distributed unified communications architecture.

The promotional bundles give customers the flexibility to build the right solution architecture. ShoreTel is now providing a matching financial incentive for systems purchased with the Polycom and HP promotional bundles. The incentive further underscores the total cost of ownership advantage touted by the three companies.

“Clients’ networks need to be scalable and agile to accommodate multimedia communications like voice and videoconferences across a variety of devices,” said Craig Hinkley, vice president, Americas, Networking, HP. “Through our integrated solution architecture with ShoreTel and Polycom, we are delivering an end-to-end unified communications infrastructure that is flexible and reliable for clients, backed by support offered through a single point of contact.”

The bundles provide a broad portfolio, which supports a wide array of verticals and solution requirements that empower organizations to effectively and efficiently connect and collaborate with their employees, partners and customers.

“Polycom RealPresence video collaboration solutions are transforming communications in more companies, across more industries, and in multiple use cases, from a doctor evaluating a patient, to a floor manager running a manufacturing plant, to engineers collaborating on a development team that spans multiple continents,” said Ron Myers, senior vice president of Global Channels at Polycom. “Bringing our solutions together with HP and ShoreTel delivers a best-of-breed choice for customers to truly unify unified communications.”

Even as other trade shows continue to struggle in a tight economic environment, the American Telemedicine Association is expecting a 20 percent increase in participation at its annual conference this year. That added interest mirrors a rise in telemedicine’s fortunate throughout the country, among patients, doctors and institutions alike.

Telemedicine, once a specialty niche, is quickly becoming a new standard of care for hospitals and healthcare providers across America. Driven by patient demand and an imperative to improve healthcare quality and accessibility, telemedicine is now a near-requirement for modern medical institutions. Organizations not adopting these technologies expose themselves to declining clinical outcomes, loss of market-share and potential litigation.

“You can no longer afford to ignore telemedicine or offer it only as a peripheral service,” said Jon Linkous, CEO of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA). “Providers that don’t integrate telemedicine into their delivery models are limiting patient access to the best on-demand care possible. They are also losing out to their competitors who are using the technology to improve care, reduce costs and expand their markets.”

The importance of telemedicine as a standard of care is evident in several areas:

Increased patient demand for telemedicine. According to ATA, more than 10 million Americans are now directly benefitting from telemedicine each year.

State mandates for insurance coverage of telehealth services. Fifteen states have now passed laws requiring private payers to cover services provided via telemedicine. The foundation for this legislation is that patients should receive the best care, regardless of whether an on-site provider is available.

A growing standard of care. Practically every hospital in the country uses telemedicine to assure 24/7 access to professional radiology services. Similar use is now growing for many other specialty services. So it is not surprising that patient and consumer groups are starting to expect such access everywhere. In fact, several recent lawsuits (that were later settled out of court) were filed against hospitals for not providing telemedicine services.

The business case for telemedicine appears to work on all sides. Doctors earn reasonable fees, insurance companies see a reduction in costs, and patients enjoy affordable care that is convenient and easily accessible.

In fact, in a recent blog on the Harvard Business Review site, Vijay Govindarajan argued that telemedicine can cut healthcare costs by an astonishing 90 percent. A professor of international business at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth University, Govindarajan compares and contrasts treatment of a serious health condition in India versus the United States. The telemedicine-based approach in India saves lives, he argues, while also saving serious cash.

This could be a cure for the financial states of Medicare, Medicaid and more, he said.

While the future of telemedicine in the United States remain unclear, one thing is for sure. Physicians’ offices should evaluate the implications for their practices and find a way to unlock this future revenue stream.

Have you had any personal experience with telemedicine, either as a patient or provider? We would love to hear about it. Tell us in the comments.

At its outset, voice over IP (VoIP) service required a networked PC and a special phone. Then any phone could be used. And recently, VoIP services became available layered over typical cellular phones.

The netTALK DUO WiFi features low costs and may give landline phone carriers a run for their money

Now, VoIP is evolving once again with the release of a VoIP telephone device that does not require a computer to make or receive calls. The netTALK DUO WiFi features low costs and may give landline phone carriers a run for their money.

The device is ideal for homes and offices that still prefer to maintain a phone number attached to the property, rather than moving exclusively to mobile phones. It could also be used to minimize expensive international calls, whether at home, in the office, or on the road.

“With the launch of netTALK DUO WiFi, we are continuing to be the first-to-market technology innovation leader, as compared to the competition,” said Anastasios ‘Takis’ Kyriakides, president and CEO for netTALK.com. “The netTALK DUO WiFi brings communication freedom to a whole new level, as it can easily be set up anywhere in the world with a Wi-Fi connection. It brings ‘cord-cutting’ to a whole new level.”

The netTALK DUO features flat-rate international call plans, live customer service and technical support, nationwide number porting, free U.S. directory service and fax capabilities.

According to a recent study by Strategic Analytics, 25 percent of all households – or 493 million households – worldwide utilize Wi-Fi to connect to the internet. The report forecasts that this number will grow to approximately 800 million households, or a penetration rate of 42 percent, by 2016.

“Saving hundreds of dollars on your home phone bill is easier than ever before now that customers can connect via wireless, which means customers can use their phone anywhere in the world, or place their phone anywhere in their house where there is access to Wi-Fi,” Kyriakides said. “Whether for a main line, a second line, a fax line, or just a line to use on trips, the netTALK DUO WiFi enables an unprecedented degree of communication freedom.”

The device has a suggested retail price of $64.95, which includes one year of service. No computer is necessary to make calls using the netTALK DUO, as it simply plugs directly into a modem or computer. The basic calling plan, which is included in the first year for free, covers calls to the United States and Canada for $29.95 per year. Unlimited calls to Mexico and Puerto Rico can be added for $5.80 per month. The international calling plan, which covers more than 60 countries, is offered for as low as $10 per month.

With employee-owned devices, it is a must to establish policy that emphasizes Corporate Asset and Content Vulnerability over any other user privacy considerations. Utilizing this policy is also a must for users to enjoy the freedom of bringing their own device and enjoying personal use, while at the same time utilizing it for critical business communication and collaboration.

In order for employees to leverage their personally-owned device at work, there are several important security requirements that users need to adhere to:

PINS- Using personal identification numbers to access devices, including “locking” after 4-8 failed attempts (or whatever you choose).

ENCRYPTION- Corporate Data stored on devices must be encrypted.

WIPE-OUT!- Users need to be aware that, upon loss of the device, Corporate Data will be remotely wiped.

In regard to attempts to avoid “having to recreate existing network policies specifically for the mobile environment,” this is an obviously a tricky question. Because mobile devices often or always are “on,” they can synchronize, providing backup; for those devices that aren’t likely to be synchronized within existing network policy, policy enforcement and thus a separate BYOD policy is necessary.

Furthermore, usage policies, including minutes, Wi-Fi access, and Support procedures need to be defined and incorporated in Human Resources documentation.

Finally, third-party Telecom Expense Management software (TEM) allows the greatest control and flexibility to easily customize mobile device management, as it differs from existing network security policy. The inherent tracking, least-cost routing, and reporting can help disburse costs to specific departments, leveraging their “buy-in” on the new policies that must be communicated and enforced for BYOD users.

Until now, most patients have assumed that telemedicine would be used to supplement their typical healthcare services and routines. But a recent study by the American College of Cardiology throws these assumptions into question by demonstrating that automated, Internet-based telemedicine systems can actually be more effective than conventional care, such as periodic office visits.

Patients who reported blood pressure readings more frequently via a web-based portal received more timely treatment decisions and medication adjustments from their health care team, when compared to a control group of hypertensive patients who had routine office visits. These findings have important implications for clinical practice given that – aside from lifestyle changes – antihypertensive medications are the most effective way to help patients lower their blood pressure. As many as 65 million American adults have high blood pressure, and roughly 74 percent take medication for it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The ongoing monitoring and reporting of blood pressure levels seems to bring about important changes in physician prescribing habits, which we think ultimately benefit patients,” said Dr. Val Rakita, internal medicine resident at Temple University Hospital and the study’s co-investigator. “Based on our findings, physicians appear to prescribe more blood pressure medications for those patients who continue to have high blood pressure despite the medications they are on. In fact, in one subset of patients, not only did we find they were prescribed more blood pressure medications, it also actually led to a larger blood pressure reduction compared to all other groups.”

In this study, patients from two large medical centers were recruited and randomized to receive either usual care or telemedicine with usual care. Patients in the telemedicine group received counseling on cardiovascular disease risk reduction and were given a home blood pressure cuff and trained on how to use it. They were asked to report their blood pressure, heart rate, weight, steps taken per day, and tobacco use twice weekly for six months. By the end of the six-month intervention, medications prescribed to those in the control group were virtually unchanged, while there was a small, but significant, increase in the number of medications ordered for patients in the telemedicine group.

Rakita said that prescribing more medication in the telemedicine group did not signify overtreatment, but was a reflection of more timely decisions to adjust medications based on patient self-monitoring and reporting.

Unlike other types of telemedicine, which may include telephone interactions, this study looked at an Internet-based system that supported ongoing communication between patients and health care providers.

“This allows for greater convenience for both sides and most likely led to the better results,” Dr. Rakita said. “High blood pressure is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is the No. 1 cause of death in America. Employing an Internet-based patient-physician communication system that can help lower blood pressure could make it possible to reduce patients’ cardiovascular risk.”

This was a secondary analysis of a telemedicine trial of 241 patients with uncontrolled hypertension. More than half of study participants were taking one or two blood pressure-lowering medications at the start of the study.

Although there was no significant difference in the decrease in blood pressure between the two groups overall, the primary group of non-diabetic patients using telemedicine was found to have lower blood pressure compared to all other groups. Dr. Rakita said it is reasonable to believe that the use of additional blood pressure medications in the telemedicine group would have translated to an associated drop in blood pressure in these patients had they been followed for a longer period of time.

“The goal of telemedicine is to reduce disease and the burden on the healthcare system in a cost-effective way,” he said. “By showing that a relatively low-cost, internet-based telemedicine system can change physicians’ prescribing habits and perhaps [lower] blood pressures, this can lead to obvious benefits to patients and the healthcare system.”

Unified communications solution providers are seeing more demand for video applications and mobile support.

The costs of business travel and the rise of the mobile workforce make mobile videoconferencing more appealing to business customers, VARs said. Increasingly, video solutions are moving away from high-end room-based systems to technologies that can help bring video applications to desktop and mobile devices, according to IDC in Framingham, Mass..

“We have had equal interest [in] video and mobility,” said Dave Casey, CEO of network integrator Westron Communications Inc. in Frisco, Texas. “By and large, people have the preconceived notion that this is too expensive. Now, people are coming away with the sense that this is possible.”

In mid-March, IDC predicted that the enterprise videoconferencing market will reach about $3.2 billion this year — an 18.7% increase over 2011. One of the main drivers helping justify unified communications products that incorporate video support continues to be their ability to help offset rising business travel expenses, especially for internal meetings, Casey said.

More companies, however, are embracing the notion that face-to-face videoconferencing capabilities can be a differentiator for sales calls.

Casey cited the case of a small financial services company that decided to invest in videoconferencing instead of prerecorded videos on its website. “Videoconferencing can offer a more in-person experience for new clients,” Casey said.

Small companies could also win points with much larger business partners.

“I ask people, ‘Do you think you could sell more if [your customers] knew you were doing this?’” Casey said. “The fact that you have video makes you appear larger and more professional in their eyes.”

For Baroan Technologies, an SMB solution provider based in Elmwood Park, N.J., support for smartphones and tablet computers is more of a factor for unified communications adoption than video, said Guy Baroan, founder and president.

“In our world, voice over IP is a big part of unified communications and how we tie in the personal digital assistants,” Baroan said.

Right now, some of Baroan’s small business customers use Skype for basic videoconferencing. But requirements for better mobile support and the need to connect with other systems are driving more small businesses to consider products such as those offered by LifeSize Communications, a division of Logitech, Baroan said.

“If gas prices continue to go up, video will be more and more of a requirement,” he said.

Technology providers can benefit from the burgeoning interest in video and mobile features by helping to seamlessly integrate them with unified communications systems, said Ed Wadbrook, vice president of unified communications and collaboration for Carousel Industries of North America Inc., a data center integrator and MSP in Exeter, R.I.

Many companies that have invested in separate solutions need a way to bridge what Wadbrook described as technology siloes that have never been unified.

“Companies are looking to have more effective meetings,” he said. “Video is more immersive and far more engaged than an audio conference.”

But the use of mobile technology and video is taxing the networking infrastructure at businesses, said Wadbrook. The increased video usage via mobile devices is pushing the limits of broadband wireless data plans. “The chokepoint is really the cost structure from the carrier,” he said. “Until we get through this, Wi-Fi will be really important.”

And at Westron, Wi-Fi infrastructure is one of the fastest-growing practice areas for 2012, Casey said.

The need to bring everything together while controlling hidden costs is creating opportunities for VARs with experience in network bandwidth management that can help businesses better control the impact of these devices.

“How do you break down all these islands and strive for interoperability, both internally and externally?” Wadbrook said. “People are trying to get greater value out of the investment they have made. … This is a great opportunity for an integrator like us that can look across the voice and data networks and answer questions like, ‘How do I design my network?’ ‘What role does security play?’ ”
